does an ok job

I've had this knife sharpener for quite a few years and it does a fair job of sharpening a knife, equal to any of the expensive electric ones. However, if you have spent good money on expensive well made forged knives, learn to use the steel. Using a sharpener can damage your blades. This one took a large knick out of the edge of my favorite chef's knife. Precision ground forged knives require precision angled sharpening, which a home sharpener cannot do properly, and can actually ruin your knives. I only use this now on my cheaper, stamped knives. For my forged blade knives, I take them to a professional sharpening service once a year. Well worth the few dollars.

Destroyed 2 knife edges with this

It took a while to figure out what the problem was. This sharpener took "bites" out of two nice knife blades. I also have had it 4-5 years and then the problem developed. I won't use it at all now and use a wustof for santoku and just ordered a Furi Diamond Fingers here for my regular blades. I am surprised this is on the market.

Henckels 12" Professional Oval Sharpening Steel With Black Handle - 32542-310 Even the best knife will lose its

Amazon.com Review
Despite its name, a sharpening steel doesn't actually sharpen, unless it's a "diamond" steel, but it does perform the vital task of realigning a knife's edge, which can bend through contact with a cutting surface or other hard object. This steel, a tapered rod of hard steel alloy, works as well as any, if not better, since its oval shape exposes more surface to the blade. It features a finger guard and a hanging ring on its handle, and its grooved, black synthetic handle provides a fist-firm grip. Using the steel often--ideally, every time you haul out a knife--prevents a blade from becoming dull and prolongs the intervals between professional sharpenings. Since the rule of thumb is that a steel should be at least as long as the knife blade being drawn across it, this steel's length is sufficient for most household knives. --Fred Brack

I really like this kitchen tool. I sharpen my knives as needed and the results are wonderful. I have the honing steel hanging above my knife block for convenience... but it also decorates a very difficult tiny slice of wall. Works perfectly for me!
